AWKWARD GOODBYES

I am perpetually interested in the extent humans will go to feel good. In Awkward Goodbyes I explore the reckless optimism of new love and the quiet hollowness of commitments made by people desperate for connection. For the tone of the film, I was drawn to the uneasy space between absurdity and reality, where heightened emotion becomes comedy because it is uncomfortably true. It was a fine line to straddle but my goal was to create the feel of an emotional rollercoaster for the audience that mirrored the characters’ experience. Central to my mission as a filmmaker is creating new narratives for women and minority voices. It was important to me that even though she was volatile and reactive, the female lead is ultimately motivated by self-interest, something rarely afforded to female characters.
